Of all the trees of the Pacific Northwest, the Arbutus tree is the most sacred to First Nations. In the legend of the Great Flood, the Salish describe how the Arbutus provided anchor for their canoes to hold steady and not drift away...therefore a symbol of protection and safety. Also the Arbutus is honoured as the Tree of Knowledge and stands for the balance of darkness and light.

Arbutus trees that grace the West Coast, their ever changing appearance and their peeling bark reveal fascinating shape, movement and colour.
