Some years go I came across this boat stored in the middle of a field! I sketched it as soon as I got home and then returned to the site to take photographs. I had to paint it. The significance of the boat's name "Ganges Girl" for those of you not from this area is that "Ganges" is the name of our main town site here on Salt Spring Island.
Ganges was named after the HMS Ganges the flagship of the Pacific Squadron under the Rear Admiral Sir Robert Lambert Baynes.
The original HMS Ganges was built in 1782 and sailed the West Indies until 1816.
The second HMS Ganges was built in Bombay India in 1821 and visited Salt Spring Island under the command of Admiral Baynes.
After returning to England the H.M.S. Ganges was used as a naval training base until 1929 when she was finally dismantled.
